Pre Xmas competitions Updated 26/10/23
Interclub - Started 1 Oct. now well under way. We have 3 GC teams on Sundays, 2 GC teams on Wednesday but none in them AC competitions. We are defending our awards (Association Ferns & Gold Buttons) in the AC Challenges. For details go to the Interclub page
Club Competitions - Draws were completed at the beginning of October. Progress is good with the AC & Ricochet games but full lawns on club days combined with lots of wet or windy weather means that few GC games have been played. For details go to the Club Competitions page.
Clubroom Painting. - Will be painted by Club members. The team started preparations on Labour Day. The bulk of the work will be done in mid December.

CNZ Coaching 28 Aug updated 07/10/23
Advantage GC - 31 members attended Greg's excellent presentation and practice on the lawns.
We were so impressed that our committee decided that all our competition handicap games would be played using the Advantage rule.
Rush - 27 members attended and enjoyed the experience of a new game with elements of AC in it.
As a result, Lawn 2 has retained the 'half lawn setup and is committed to making that lawn available every Thursday morning. Someone will be available to assist with rules and advice.
CPR Training 20 Sept
The Wellington Free Ambulance provided a comprehensive training session to about 25 members, most of whom had no recent training. Nick made it look easy and had everyone practicing. Our chances of surviving aheart stoppage has increased considerably.

SUMMERSET SPONSORED EASTER TOURNAMENT 2022
Held at Plimmerton Croquet Club on Sunday 17 and Monday 18 April, and we were able to enjoy two sunny, windless autumn days to play this tournament with full fields of 16 players each day.
Day 1 Sunday: -
This was for Division 1 (9-16 handicaps) and Division 2 (6-8 handicaps).
After briefings by Tournament and Referees Managers, the tournament was underway by 8.30am. Each division was required to play 7 games each, and with the increase in game times to 50 minutes, plus Regulation 9.6, plus any additional time to complete games, it was going to make a long day for competitors. Play finally finished about 5.15pm, and it was fortunate the sunshine allowed these last games to be completed in daylight.
The winners were finally sorted out, and in Division 1 Wendy Neilsen (PLM) narrowly beat Bill Paterson (KDH) on a countback after winning the same number of games and being equal on net hoops. Wendy won after beating Bill in the round robin game.
In Division 2 it was more clear-cut. Nick Taylor (KDH) won all his matches, and John Kane (KEL) finished second.
Day 2 Monday: -
This was for Division 3 (3-5 handicaps) and Division 4 (-6 to 2 handicaps).
Following briefing play was underway on time, but as there were only four entries in Division 4, a decision had been made earlier to accept 4 extra players in Division 3, resulting in this competition being played in two Sections with the first two places in each Section playing off for final places.
Play proceeded smoothly through the day, and with the changed format there was only six rounds required as opposed to seven rounds on Sunday. This ensured an earlier finish than the day before.
After some exciting battles in both Divisions, the winners were eventually found even if the playoff match to determine the winner of Division 3 went beyond Reg. 9.6 and the final score of 5-4 saw James Corrigan triumph over Jim Strachan. This shows just how close this match was.
The winners in Division 3 were: First James Corrigan (WKE), Second Jim Strachan (KDH) and Third Ross Bisley (WHV).
In Division 4 Shaun Theobald (WHV) was First, and Bob McKenzie (PRM) was Second.
Thank you to Ian Stuart who helped with administration on Sunday, and to Liesbeth and her team of helpers in the kitchen (Sue White, Carolyn Rait, Ivan Nicholson, Claire Roberts and Barbara Smith) who kept the drinks and food available throughout both days, and finally the Referees Wayne Gair, Dianne McDonald, Anne McKenzie and Mike Theobald. Thank you all, and also anyone else I may have missed. The biggest thank you of all to Summerset for their continued sponsorship of the tournament.

The Paekakariki Vase is an association croquet tournament between three clubs, Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Plimmerton. This year unfortunately, Waikanae was unable to field a team so Paraparaumu and Plimmerton each fielded 4 doubles teams.

Total hoops scored Plimmerton 56 and Paraparaumu 55.
Plimmerton teams: - Tom Berryman and Ross Williamson; Grant Kenny and Carolyn Rait; Robin Chesterfield and Graeme Bamford; Ivan Nicholson and Beverley Berryman.

WCA AC VETS ADVANCED
HANDICAP TOURNAMENT - 7-10 March 2022 The WCA Vets tournament is open to all players over 60 years of age. Over 4 days, 7-10 March 2022 and breaking with tradition where normally the event was held at both Petone and Plimmerton, the 12 players played all matches at Plimmerton. With lovely, fine weather the matches were played with friendly sportsmanship. Plimmerton entrants were Grant Kenny, Tom Berryman and Beverley Berryman. Played in two sections: -
The playoff between Grant and Pauline was won by Grant 18 to 10. Contributed by Carolyn Rait |
CASTLE CUP - Waikanae 27 February 2022
Winner: Plimmerton On 27 Feb 2022 Plimmerton roundly defeated Waikanae winning 7 games to 2. It was a joy to play on lovely lush greens where the ball stayed on track. Because of Omicron play, lunch and morning and afternoon teas were all held outside on a clear, fine day. Doubles were held in the morning and singles in the afternoon. Battle of the Burbs - Saturday 27 February 2021
Results
1st Manor Park - Tony and Pip
2nd Whitby - Graeme and Carolyn
3rd Khandallah - Karen and Paul
4th Trentham - John and Joy
Congrats to the finalists and to all of those who attended, played and helped support this event.
Special thanks to Tony LP who scrutinised the results for me and ensured I had the correct teams in the final.
The winner of our covid themed recovery raffle was surprisingly not Murray, but Jo Bray. Thanks to all of you who bought one ticket or many, If you also play Bridge or Mahjong or any other games inside during the week, can you please pass on my appreciation to those groups for their support in our raffle and let them know on this occasion they were unsuccessful, but I'm sure there will be another one.
I hope everyone who played now has a good understanding of extra turns in a 7 point game. Unfortunately most games are 13 points, but that's another story/tournament.
I enjoyed hosting this event and thank you for entering and participating even if it was just for the food.
Regards,
Ian Stuart

Have a Go at Ricochet Day
Saturday 29 February 2022
Another successful tournament (Fun Day) organised by Carolyn Rait.
Players were organised into 4 sections each playing 4 games with a different partner each game. Each group had a Ricochet mentor to help with each shot taken, reminding us that we had two more shots after each roquet!
We had 32 players, with vistors from Levin, Waimarie and Wainuiomata. The winners of each section, Bruce, Karen, Robin and Wendy, enjoy your prize and come back next year to defend your titles.
A lovely morning tea was put on by club members, and the kitchen crews - Marie, Gabrielle and Claire Bishop in the morning and Jo Sage and Mary in the afternoon, they kept everyone fed and watered. Thank you so much.

QUIZ NIGHT - 17 JULY 2021
A big thankyou to everyone who supported our 2021 Quiz Night by attending on the night, buying raffle tickets, donating items to our raffles for the evening and generally supporting the event. The night was once again a great success attended by over 50 members and friends who had a fun evening and delicious food. The event raised approximately $1,200 after expenses which we should be proud of, and will cover the cost of a new dishwasher.
I would in particular like to thank the following people who contributed to the evening.
There can only be one winning table on the night and this year it went to Paul Geoghegan and his guests. Second place went to Tom and Beverley Berryman, Maureen Reed, Murray Cain and John Bolland.

Croquet Ole Tournament
27 February 2021
Sponsored by Jane Mather, Collective Real Estate, 021 339 623 https://www.janemather.co.nz/
We had a fantastic turnout on Saturday. A total of 55 players participated, 25 played both the morning and afternoon sessions with 30 additional players electing to play either the morning or afternoon (15 players per session). Apart from Plimmerton, we had players from Kelburn (10), Muritai (3), Khandallah (4), Paraparaumu (5), Levin (2) and Waikanae (6).
The forty players in each session were ranked by handicap with the top 20 forming a Senior block and the bottom 20 forming a Junior block. The draw was structured to ensure that players had a different partner for each of the three or six games they played during the day. In many cases it was also possible to arrange things so that their opponents were only played against once during the day.
8 OLE chocolate prizes were presented at each session to those players selected to have played the most skillful, lucky or interesting shots during their games.
The tournament concluded with an enthusiastic confirmation from the players that they would like the tournament to continue next season.
Thank you to our sponsor Jane Mather of Collective Real Estate.

Croquet Ole Tournament 2020
(07 Mar 2020)
Croquet Ole is a fun tournament played annually at Plimmerton Croquet Club. Our thanks to Tom Berryman for organising this event.
This year’s Ole was postponed to Saturday 7 March due to bad weather on the previous Saturday. We had a lovely sunny day and played three enjoyable games in the morning and three in the afternoon.
We had 24 players in the morning and 28 in the afternoon; a smaller turnout due to the change of date clashing with several other events.
RESULTS
Morning Session
Afternoon Session
We also provided six lucky dip prizes in each session for noteworthy OLE strokes.

NZ Masters Games - Croquet - Dunedin - 1-10 February 2020
PCC had 4 members who participated in the Masters Games. Croquet was played at 4 different clubs throughout Dunedin, Forbury, Tainui, Leith, and Punga.
GC Singles (Levels):-
GC Doubles:-
AC Singles:-
Ricochet:-
Message from our Gold Medal winner, Gwenda Lapthorne:-
“We felt very proud to represent Plimmerton Croquet Club. One of the most enjoyable aspects of going and playing at the Masters was meeting and playing people from different clubs who we had never played before. We also enjoyed some of the Masters Games events and meeting some of the other people participating in other sports. Over 5,000 people took part in the games, so with Elton John in town the first weekend and over 5,000 people attending the concert, Dunedin was buzzing – shame about the weather. We were in Dunedin for six days and it rained for 5 of those days. A shame for the organisers as a number of sports were cancelled and then people could not travel south for a few days due to road closures from flooding. The volunteers at the Masters Games Hub were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them.
If you ever get the chance to go to the Masters Games I would say go for it. It is quite different from playing in croquet tournaments.”

A Splendid Day of Celebration
A large number of club members, ex club members and representatives from other clubs turned out to celebrate our 90th Anniversary, the opening of the fifth lawn and the opening day of the new season on a wonderfully sunny and calm Plimmerton day. After a morning of tournament play (a new form of croquet combining association and golf), we had a fabulous lunch before our Patron John Burke cut the Anniversary cake, cut the ribbon on hoop one of the new lawn and ran the first hoop to start the new season. Work on the Fifth Lawn Update (22Jan 2016)
Kelvin reports: "Mexteds are completely finished. The area outside the clubhouse was excavated, backfilled with all the sifted soil from our previous piles and top class topsoil from the Wairarapa. It has been leveled off, and new grass has been sown.
The area will be out of bounds for several weeks until the new grass is properly established.
Turf was also removed and topsoil placed at the Ulric Street end of lawn 2. We need to consolidate, level and sow that ourselves. Hopefully within the next 2 months.
Extra topsoil has also been kept.
The rough soil and stones from the old soil heaps were removed, the area leveled off and the new grass sown. several people made contributions to the end result but Bob McKenzie's extensive assistance and advice was invaluable."

A Fifth Lawn for Plimmerton Croquet Club (22 Nov 2015)
Voters at the Special General Meeting held on November 21st agreed unanimously to proceed with the work as outlined in Kelvin's report below:
"Our club received a grant for $10,000 from the Mana Community Grants Foundation to enable us to proceed with increasing our lawn playing area so that we can fit 5 lawns. 2 will be full size and 3 will be 95% size. 95% lawns will be able to be used for all competitions except National Tournaments.
The grant will enable Mexted’s to do all the work on Stage 1 without assistance from club members. The work is planned for December. All four lawns will remain fully available during Stages 1 & 2. The work being done is outside the existing lawn boundaries. There will be restrictions on movement around the areas being worked on especially when machinery is operating, but this is not expected to affect club play. We will avoid the work being done when we are holding tournaments."
The layout for the new lawns is shown in this document: New Lawn Layout
